The Economic Freedom Index (EFI) is an annual ranking published by The Heritage Foundation that assesses the economic freedom of countries worldwide. The index measures the degree to which individuals and businesses can freely operate without undue restraint. Countries are scored across 12 indicators grouped into four broad pillars: Rule of Law, Government Size, Regulatory Efficiency, and Open Markets.

  • Overall Score: 50.9 (Mostly Unfree)
  • Global Rank: 142nd out of 184 countries
  • Regional Rank (Sub-Saharan Africa): 33rd out of 47 countries

Zambia’s score is well below the SADC average of 55.4. While Mauritius and Botswana are attractive for investment, Zambia lags due to institutional inefficiencies and fiscal instability.

Recommendations for Zambia

 Zambia’s low economic freedom score highlights the urgent need for structural and institutional reforms. Improving economic freedom is essential for attracting investment and enhancing growth prospects, particularly within the SADC region.
