Punching Above Your Weight.

Most of us know a man or two who is with a partner that society would say is ‘too good for him’. Fascinating concept, this. To look at two people and decode that one of them is pulling the other down and not that one is lifting the other. At the bar, it’s called punching above your weight.

See, men start off with everything out of their reach and history is littered with us punching above our weight.

A teacher becoming this country’s first republican president. Christopher Katongo leading unfancied men up against the feared Didier Drogba’s elite team mates in 2012.

We are, at best, underdogs when we aim higher.

Underdogs up against education, a job you’re not qualified for but still apply, house you dream of building, a PhD, mental health, a holiday you’ve always wanted to go on, the career you’re pursuing or the family you’re leading.

Punching above your weight is going a level above the usual. Because, gentlemen, we’re carrying a lot of weight.

Boozy weeknights, procrastination, financial indiscipline, multiple sexual partners, unresolved trauma, unhealthy meals, zero exercise, porn addiction, gambling.

A man is being disingenuous if he can claim that another man is punching above their weight. We are all literally in a gloves off street fight with self-doubt, limiting beliefs and society.
