Position vs. Purpose: Why Your Worth Isn’t Tied to a Job Title.
Penned by James Chona
Many of us have experienced it and I am actually experiencing it as we speak– the phone calls slow down after leaving a role or position. Suddenly, those connections seem to fade, and it feels like our relevance is tied to that important position we once held. People who once called you daily (and maybe you were even too busy to answer them) may not even pick your calls now. Sadly that is inevitable.
But here’s the truth: It’s perfectly fine (very fine actually) if people are only connected with us because of our job titles. That’s how professional networks work. They are not family that you should feel a sense of entitlement. The key, however, is not to cling to a position as a measure of our worth or identity. Stop calling yourself Honourable, Director or Chief or even sign off as former this and that. let go.
A position should never just be a job – it should be about mindset and purpose.
When the job changes, our ability to remain relevant is in our hands. Reinvent yourself. Align with new opportunities and people that resonate with your evolving purpose and vision. Don’t depend on a role to give you value. Instead, let your value create new roles, new networks, and fresh opportunities.
Remember, your position isn’t defined by a title. It’s defined by how you approach life and your ability to stay relevant in whatever space you find yourself in. Keep moving forward, and never stop positioning yourself.
