A Stroke of Luck, Faith, and History

Written By James Chona

On Saturday, 17th October 2015, during the annual Presidents Putter competition at Chainama Hills Golf Club, I achieved something that fewer than five top 100 ranked golfers have ever done — an albatross on hole number 16, using a Srixon 3 golf ball (which I have kept as seen in the photo captioned here).

An albatross in golf is one of the rarest feats, often attributed to skill and precision, but luck plays a significant role. Achieving this places me among a select few who have pulled off such a rare and improbable feat. Even the great Tiger Woods is not a member of this coveted Double Eagle Club.

Here’s the lesson I want to share: never let pedigree or past experience limit what you believe is possible. In life and business, the right opportunity, the right timing, and yes, a bit of luck, can change everything. Yes, I believe in miracles.

Proverbs 3:5-6 says, “Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to Him, and He will make your paths straight.”

This verse reminds me that even the most improbable achievements are part of God’s greater plan. When the odds seem against us, and others may doubt our potential, God’s timing is always perfect.

This albatross, a once-in-a-lifetime moment for an unknown golfer, serves as a reminder that faith and perseverance, mixed with a stroke of luck (a miracle), can lead to extraordinary outcomes.

So, to everyone striving for success — don’t be discouraged by what others say or by perceived limitations. Often, it’s in the unexpected moments that miracles happen, and you too can make history.
